A printer cartridge is a replaceable container holding the ink (liquid) or toner (powder) needed for printing, acting as a core consumable that also contains electronics to communicate with the printer about ink levels and usage, ensuring high-quality, precise output. There are two main types: ink cartridges for inkjet printers, spraying liquid ink, and toner cartridges for laser printers, using electrostatically fused powder for faster, bulk printing.  

Some printer models will allow you to change these manually; on others the type of black ink is linked to the media setting you choose and is therefore set automatically by the printer.
